Our school is the hub of our local community and has a proud history of community events. These are some of the regular highlights on our school calendar.
The Oratia Country Fair is a biennial event, which usually takes place in late March. It is our school’s big fundraising event and is a great opportunity for people in the district to catch up and former students to reconnect. The most recent Country Fair was hosted on Sunday 26 March 2017 and raised money to install astro turf in our Junior School. Our next Country Fair will be on the last Sunday in March 2019. Mark the date on your calendar now! To find out how you can get involved in this fun event click here or like our Facebook page.
The Stark-Brown Picnic
Funded by a bequest from the family of Michael Stark-Brown, in memory of his wife Grace, the Stark-Brown Picnic is held in February of each year to bring together all children in the community for a fun afternoon of games and entertainment. As well as putting on this free, fun picnic for the Oratia community each summer, the Stark-Brown Trust also funds a scholarship that assists students from the Oratia area to study agriculture at tertiary level.
On the last Friday of October each year, we celebrate our elders by hosting an open morning where we invite our grandparents to spend the first two hours of the school day with us. Grandparents join us each year from far and wide and walk around the school with their grandchildren learning about their favourite places at the school and sharing some class time with the children. The visit ends with morning tea.
One of our traditional events is the annual Flower Show. This event celebrates the creativity of our students and their talented teachers. Our children bring flowers and display-making equipment from home and spend the morning creating fantastic displays. Longstanding community members come along to judge the displays from 11.45am onward. This is a one-day event only and each year delivers wonderfully creative surprises.
Parent Network Fun Events
Each year our Parent Network hosts at least one fun event for adults. This is an opportunity for parents to gather a group of friends, get your tickets and have a great night out. Watch the newsletter for more details.
All our students are encouraged to participate in free play and structured games. Throughout the year our senior students have opportunities to compete against students from other schools at inter-school sport competitions such as athletics, netball, rugby, hockey, swimming and cross-country running, to name a few. We love having parents, whanau and caregivers come along to cheer our teams on.
During the heat of Term 1, our junior and senior students host their swim carnival days, when students get to show off their swimming, water safety and water survival skills. Parents, whanau and caregivers are welcome to attend these events. Watch the newsletter for dates and details.
