Maths
Strand
This term we are looking at geometry, specifically positional language.
We are learning to use positional language to
- describe where we are
- tell where something is
- explain how to get somewhere
- follow directions and maps
You can help us by asking us to follow directions, and tell where something is hidden.
Numeracy
We like to work in small groups to play maths games that help us learn.
We are learning to:
- Count by 2's up to 20
- Learn our numbers to 100
- Tell what number comes before and after
- Learn our basic facts to 10
You can help us by encouraging us to, count steps by 2's, Look at number patterns on a hundreds board(Ask Mrs Laycock if you want a photocopy of one), play games with dice (eg, snakes & ladders), practice basic facts.
Reading
We read everyday so we can become super readers!
Guided reading
We read with the teacher and bring books home to practice. We practice looking at the sounds in the word, checking for picture clues, and re reading the sentence to help us with our reading.
Shared reading
We love reading together. We can use the glitter wand to help us point to the words.
We love listening to stories. This helps us to increase our vocabulary, and enjoy the messages in the stories. We like to listen to funny stories. Sometimes we make puppets or act the story out. This helps us to understand the story and be able to retell a story in our own way.
Writing
We are concentrating on writing letters this term. Letters to friends, family, teddies are all fun. We have our postboxes too. If you want to leave us a message you can use our postboxes!
We are also using letters to explain to others what we are doing, why we are doing it or how something happens.
We are learning to:
- give a reason why using 'because'
- use time and sequence words like 'first, next, then'
- use finger spacing between words
- listen for the sounds in words to help us spell them
Inquiry
During inquiry, we ask questions and find answers to help us learn about the things we are interested in.
The first 4 weeks we will be investigating post, letters, stamps etc. This will include designing our own postboxes and stamps.
In week 5/6 we will have a visit from the circus and a circus workshop. We will then concentrate on our art display for the exhibition next term.
For the last 4 weeks we will be investigating zero waste, reducing & recycling and keeping our gardens fabulous. We will also be going on a trip to the waste recycling centre.
